Sometimes I see couples going their separate ways after a really long time together. I know I’m lucky to be in it with someone for the long haul, and I hope that never changes. But people change over the years, and I guess if you don’t grow together then maybe you might grow apart. I was thinking about the people who are caught unprepared for this, because it’s heartbreaking when one person’s feelings change but not the other’s. This is where the idea for “The Fire” comes from.
If the fire went out/ How did that happen?
Was I sleeping when the darkness came in creeping?
When I was working on the coda here, the way that the drums, bass, and piano came together was so funky that I didn’t want it to end. So I just kept going, and that eventually became the instrumental B-side, “Still Burning.”
