FALLING

EP - 5 TRACKS | NOVEMBER 8, 2024

FALLING came together from many different directions and somehow ended up with a single, unifying concept.

“Free Fall” is inspired by mid-90s Depeche Mode – specifically Songs of Faith and Devotion (1994) and Ultra (1997). “The Fallout” is an attempt to sit in the crack between Depeche Mode and (always) Tears for Fears. I was especially thinking about the driving 6/8 bassline that animates both “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” (1985) and “The Tipping Point” (2022). At its heart, “15 Minutes (Fall to Earth)” is a piano ballad that evokes the mixed joy and regret of seeing someone succeed when that person used to be close but is not part of your life anymore. The idea came from the novel The Last Songbird (2023) by Daniel Weizmann, whose protagonist is a songwriter driving an Uber in LA. The Rhodes is for Lucas. “Don’t Fall 2 Pieces” is a nod to my friend Eric Bass of Shinedown, who (along with his songwriting partner and bandmate Brent Smith) has a gift for writing encouraging and uplifting rock songs that don’t feel corny. Hope I got close. (And I hope he doesn’t mind I went for the Mutt Lange backing vocals circa 1987.) “Nightfall” is a quiet, contemplative reimagining of the musical material from “Free Fall.”
